Pastes and gels for EEG, ECG and sleep studies.
Electrode pastes and gels used for skin preparation are used to reduce impedance when in contact with the skin, and as conductive and adhesive paste for electrode attachment for routine EEG, long-term EEG, long-term video EEG, epilepsy EEG and sleep EEG/PSG testing.
Medical gels and pastes used for EEG, ECG, sleep diagnostics and EP studies serve three main purposes: skin preparation, electrode application and signal conduction.
1, Skin preparation
Dead skin cells, dirt, sweat and grease cause high transmission impedances, sometimes up to several megaohms (M Ω), between the skin and the electrode. Reducing this transfer impedance is essential for optimal measurement.
The AASM recommends an impedance below 5 kiloOhms (5 k Ω) and therefore the skin should be cleaned to achieve stable electrical contact and low transient impedance. A preparation gel such as Nuprep is used to clean the skin and achieve the optimal impedance. In case of very oily skin, alcohol wipes (e.g. isopropanol) can also be used to degrease the skin.
2, Conductivity and adhesion
To ensure stable and reliable conduction, electrodes (e.g. Gold Cup electrodes) should be fixed after skin cleansing. For this purpose adhesive/conductive pastes or gels (e.g. Lic2 , EC2 and Ten20) are used. These are of different thicknesses and are applied depending on the type of study (routine or long term lead) and the electrode (gold, Ag/AgCl cup electrodes or EEG system caps).
3, Pastes and gels for skin preparation
By default, Nuprep is recommended for skin preparation. The gel is also recommended for sensitive skin, as no skin irritation occurs during application. Nuprep does not contain latex, either as an ingredient or in the packaging. In addition, latex-free gloves are used in the manufacturing process to eliminate contamination. Nuprep is used to clean the skin, reduce impedance and improve conduction in the following tests:
EEG tests
Sleep diagnostics and sleep screening
Long-term ECG and short-term ECG
Evoked potential (EP) testing
Cardiac catheter monitoring
ECG telemetry
Cardiac stress testing
Cardiac rehabilitation monitoring
Intraoperative monitoring
Glue and conductive paste for EEG testing and sleep diagnostics
Adhesive and conductive pastes are used to fix electrodes (e.g. gold cup electrodes, silver-silver chloride cup electrodes (Ag/AgCl cup electrodes) or silver cup electrodes) during routine and long-term leads:
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Electroneurography (ENG)
Brain mapping
Evoked potential (EP) testing
Neurofeedback
Sleep diagnostics and sleep screening (PG and PSG)
Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
